You can traverse a large, graphically intense, open world on the train from work, then dock it on your tv while cooking your ramen noodles and then take it to the toilet to relieve said ramen noodles
I don’t know, you do you boo, just wash your hands afterwards
When the Switch was announced and revealed all those years ago, there was a general consensus of “Ugh, wow, wait what??!?” the buzz around the genre bending console was mixed to positive. Even when it was released, general public didn’t know how to react to it but here we are, over 70 million units sold and a software sale attach rate to make your last clingy co-dependent partner jealous.
To say the Switch is successful is an understatement, it’s only half-way through its’ life cycle, Nintendo and partners still seem to have a few things up its’ sleeve for games & peripherals. Not mention the potential (most likely) Switch revisions and upgrade. Pretty much a good testimonial when gamers say “I’ll wait for the Switch version” or “Port it over from PS or Xbox is fine” or “I’ll give you a BJ while you play Switch”
But No console sells by itself, you need a great marketing campaign and more importantly fantastic first party exclusive and 3rd party support. The Wii & Wii U had these but the effort put in the Switch Exclusive really make the system shine.
From the time I found my 336th Korok seed in LOZ: Breath of the Wild on the Manchester tram to the 1st Snipe with a Squiffer in Splatoon 2 in my living room to my brother calling me a t*** when I stole his star in Super Mario Party at my parents. the Switch has helped create some magical moments in a variety of playstyles. Which reminds me what is Launch trailer Karen up to?
I still have a drawer of games to stream, podcasts to record and YouTube videos to create. All because I spend so much time joyfully gaming on the go and talking about this beauty of a hybrid. Its also led to me enjoying gaming, giving me confidence and a community to stream to and led to a few more opportunities.
Hopes for the Future
While I fangirl over my possible favourite games console ever (Don’t worry Gamecube you are still here), I still need to note that nothing is perfect, there’s a few things which I hope Nintendo and other developers make note of to immprove quality of life & keep the switch train rolling.
- SWITCH REVISED Going to say the most obvious one and say bring out the Switch Pro or Switch v2.0 or New Switch 2DDD OR WHATEVER! Something to boost loading times, battery life, docking process power and maybe a bigger screen
- BETTER JOYCONS Fair to say Nintendo have run into some trouble regarding the quality of the joy cons, i dislike the size of the buttons and the price. Also they should supply clip on designs as by game related joy cons are EXPENSIVE, a clip on or rubber façade would be cist effective and crown pleasing.
- ONLINE FEATURES The online features are a bit lacking, a more reliable connectivity for certain games (Smash, Splatoon cough, cough), more current games to pick from (I mean anything N64 and upwards would be a start) and streaming services, it s tablet, wtf can’t i awkwardly watch Star Trek Discovery on Netflix in my lonely bed!?
- PERSONALITION Be great to personalise your switch with background themes and music, even have a menu dedicated to the game you are playing for updates, tips and requests
- SHOPPING the eshop is great but it could really do with remapping and have things like recommendations for games you’ve played/purchased, user rating (dear god don’t add a comment section) and implement physical sales there too.
- AMIIBO I know Nintendo won’t release a toys to life game but just produce more of these, most of us just buy them to gather dust and tweet to say how much money we wasted on them…but nostalgia boner gonna blow!
I’ll think of more but thanks for reading, and keep gaming 🙂 x
